A clean house doesn’t have to come with chemical residue and loads of bleach. There are plenty of ways to keep surfaces looking like new without the harsh and expensive products found in the grocery store. Natural products are often just as effective and tend to be much safer for households with young children and pets. If you just bought a home for sale in Irvine and want to give it a thorough clean, here are four easy cleaning recipes using products you probably already have lying around.
1. Homemade Glass Cleaner
• 2 cups distilled or filtered water
• 2 tablespoons white vinegar
• 10 drops essential oil of choice (optional)
Mix all ingredients in an empty, clean spray bottle. Use as needed to clean windows or glass surfaces, and wipe dry with a microfiber cloth.
2. Natural Drain Cleaner
• ½ cup baking soda
• ½ cup white vinegar
• 10 cups boiling water
Pour baking soda down the drain first, immediately followed by the vinegar. The resulting chemical reaction will break down fatty acids into soap and glycerin, clearing most clogs. Allow baking soda and vinegar to rest for 15 minutes. Follow with the boiling water to clear the drain. This recipe is especially good for clearing blockages in sinks, tubs, and showers.
3. Wood Floor Cleaner and Polish
• 1 gallon warm water
• 1 cup vegetable or olive oil
• 1 cup white vinegar
• 10 drops essential oil of choice (to leave a pleasant scent, try lemon or lavender)
Mix all ingredients in a bucket and use solution to mop floors as usual. To polish, mix only vegetable oil, vinegar, and essential oil in a jar and apply evenly with a sponge or rag. Wipe away with a soft cotton towel.
4. Bathroom and Kitchen Disinfectant
• 2 teaspoons borax (a naturally occurring powder)
• 3 cups hot water
• 4 tablespoons white vinegar
• 10 drops tea tree oil
Mix all ingredients in a spray bottle and shake to mix. Let rest before using. If even more cleaning power is needed, feel free to add an additional 2 tablespoons of natural liquid dish soap.
